After a year of dragging it’s feet, and even being ordered by a federal judge to make a decision, the Interior Department has finally listed the polar bear as a threatened species. The polar bear must be protected because of the decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming.
But because of the current administration, it would be “inappropriate” to use this protection to force the reduction of greenhouse gases, or address the issue of global warming. Another “win” for the environment that is just full of loopholes and reasons not to take any serious action.

Flanked by a large photo of a polar bear, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne on Wednesday announces the species as threatened due to shrinking sea ice habitat.
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration on Wednesday declared the polar bear a threatened species, saying it must be protected because of the decline in Arctic sea ice from global warming. But activists were quick to criticize the ruling, saying it was full of loopholes.
Interior Department Secretary Dirk Kempthorne cited dramatic declines in sea ice over the last three decades and projections of continued losses. These declines, he told a news conference, mean the polar bear is a species likely to be in danger of extinction in the near future.
Kempthorne also said, though, that it would be “inappropriate” to use the protection of the bear to reduce greenhouse gases, or to broadly address climate change.

Someone sent me a link to this site today about the show Lost. It has an interesting theory on time travel, the time loop theory. I’m not sure that this is what the writers are thinking, but it is a very well thought out and interesting theory on the show.

Well I was a little bit upset last week because all of the baby bunnies left their bunny hole from under the deck. I knew that it was going to happen sooner or later… that they would grow too big to stay in that little hole, and would all go out and find new places of their own. But I was concerned about them and just wanted to make sure they are ok.
Last night I saw a little chipmunk in the yard, and mom said it sometimes hides in a piece of 4″ wide PVC pipe we have under the deck… it’s an extra piece that is used for drainage, but isn’t hooked up to anything. Well, I went looking for the chipmunk in there last night, and was suprised to see one of my bunnies in there! And it was about 3 times as big as before, so it is doing very well, growing nicely and eating on its own.
This morning I looked in there again, and there were 2 bunnies. I was able to get some pictures of the one before I put them back.

I got very bad news today. My Aunt Peg had a heart attack and passed away last night. She was without a doubt one of my favorite people in the world. She was kind, caring and generous-with her time and spirit. She was truly genuine in her thoughts and speech. You never had to wonder what she was thinking, all you had to do was ask. My heart and prayers go out to her children (Susan, Meral Anne, Jack, Joanne, Bobby, and Barb) and their families. If you pray, please offer up a prayer for her and her family today.
Thank you,
Bridget
Here are two pictures of Aunt Peg:
She is in the center of the top row. (I have better pictures, but I have been re-arranging my albums so I can scan them all in and it is a mess right now.)
She is in the front in the black flowered dress. This was taken at our wedding and she is surrounded by her children and their spouses.

I got a real up close and personal look at Mommy bunny today. She was in the yard this afternoon when I got home from work and took the dogs out. She immediately made a break for it and went outside of the fence so the doggies couldn’t get to here (they wanted to chase her around for fun).
But after I took the dogs back in I went back outside and was watching her eat… have to make some more milk for the baby bun buns. She seemed to not be too scared of me, letting me get to 5-8 feet away. I am sure she somehow knew I wouldn’t hurt her and was looking after the babies too.
I got plenty of great pictures of her:

Bridget and I wanted to let everyone (that doesn’t already know) that she is expecting! As of today, she is 15 weeks along, and our due date is set at October 4th, 2008.
Today we went in for an ultrasound. Here are some of the pictures that we got:
Everything looks great so far. The baby’s heartrate was 150 bpm, although it’s been all over the map within the normal range. The baby was very active moving his or her arms and legs.
The baby was also nice enough to give us a good look at his or her spine, and that looks good as far as the doctor could tell. We will go back again in 6 weeks for another closer look.
You can see all of the ultrasounds, including earlier ones, here.

Well I had to go and check on the baby bunnies again this morning. There are 4 of them in there, and all were doing very well. Mom must have stopped by during the night to feed them, and she covered them up with some more fur. She also ate some of the lettuce that we left out for her, so she would have plenty of milk for her babies.
I got some more cute pictures of them in the daylight:
You can see all of the pictures here.

We have some newborn bunnies in our backyard, right under our deck. They are so cute, and only a couple of days old because they still have their eyes closed and are only an inch or two long. I got some great pictures of them:
We’re going to keep a close eye on them so the dogs don’t get too close to them, and make sure that mom is back sometime tonight to feed them. We put out some food for her too.

I thought that this was a funny story. Roger Waters, of Pink Floyd fame, was playing a concert at the Coachella music festival in Southern California, when his famous giant inflatable Pig made a break for it and floated away. The Pig is from one of his songs of the same name, on Pink Floyd’s 1977 anti-captialist Animals album. The album was inspired by George Orwell’s book Animal Farm.
I saw this Pig at Veteran’s Stadium during Pink Floyd’s 1994 Division Bell concert, and it is huge. The one from the concert that was lost was as tall as a 2 story house, and as wide as 2 buses. It’s funny since I’m listening to all Pink Floyd at work today.
INDIO, Calif. - When things go bad for a huge inflatable pig, don’t expect it to be pretty.
A helium-filled swine, released into the night sky during Roger Waters’ headlining set Sunday at the Coachella music festival in the Southern California desert, has been found in pieces.
Two couples found tattered halves of the pig in their yards, a few miles from the festival grounds.

We went for our portrait photography field trip today at Newlin Grist Mill Park. It was an overcast day, but at least it stayed dry out and we had plenty of soft light to work with. The park itself was beautiful, and was an excellent place to take portraits at with many photogenic scenes and locations.
Here are a few ducks that I got pictures of:
I’m sure I’ll have some of my portraits posted over at www.kelleherphoto.com shortly.

Last night’s episode of Lost was one of the best ever! You just have to love Ben’s character, the ultimate nerdy smart guy that also has this dark side you have to be afraid of. I mean, how can you not fear someone that can call up a black smoke monster that will kill you. And we got some more answers (and lots of questions) about Ben and Widmore’s relationship.
“The Shape of Things to Come” was the ninth episode of Season 4 of Lost, which was broadcast on April 24, 2008 in the United States.

Steve wrote this blog posting linking to a list of 50 ways to help the planet. I’d like to share it here as well, as I thought that this was a very good summary of some easy things everyone can do to help lessen their impact on the planet.
I’d recommend printing this out (using both sides of recycled paper of course) and hang it somewhere at home for easy reference.

Just wanted to remind everyone to stop by your local polling place and vote in the Pennsylvania Primary. Every vote counts and I think a strong turnout sends a loud message that we want and need change in this country.
There’s plenty of information available on this website along with polling locations: http://www.dos.state.pa.us/voting/
